I have to confess Hurricane Isaac slipped right below my radar. Hope the clean up is going ok there Rexy.

Tropical storm Sandy expected to hit New York City next week bringing major flooding and snow in the mountains, unbelievable.

^^ Indeed Rexy, and I briefly mentioned Hurricane/TS Sandy in my local weather thread a few days ago. This has the potential to be an extremely dangerous system, and has been likened to the " Perfect Storm " of 1991, showing very similar characteristics. Here is what USA Today are saying :

http://www.usatoday.com/story/weather/2 ... s/1662223/

Areas to the north of the storm centre are most at risk of a potentially devastating storm surge which would inundate low lying coastal areas. Recent information suggests a combined surge/wave/swell height of anywhere between 15 and 25 feet quite possible.

As with any weather system, let alone a major one like this, plotting and predicting its track and impact is difficult, but the north eastern seaboard could be staring down the barrel of a major loaded gun. Here is the link to the NHC :

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/

But as you rightly say Rexy, the dangers aren't limited to the seaboard. This system will be interracting with other systems and ingredients which are likely to affect a very large ( and heavily populated ) region of the North East. Hence the comparisons to the " Perfect Storm ".

Thanks as always for reading and posting. Stay Safe. Moley :|

Some friends are stuck on holiday in Cuba following a hurricane and contacted their daughter a couple of days ago with a few bars of remaining power in their mobile phone.

There hasn't been any power in their hotel for (then) 30+ hours and the food and (warm) bottled water is being rationed. The air conditioning is obviously not working and in outside temperatures of around 30C (much higher inside) it's all getting a bit uncomfortable in the double glazed sealed rooms. Despite the sticky conditions there's no change of bedding or clean towels (no laundry machines), and a number of bedrooms on the ground floor have been turned into communal shower rooms/toilets for guests to share as the water cannot be pumped to bathrooms upstairs- even for the en suite toilet.

To be fair, they are not in any danger, although try telling that to their 23year old daughter who is in a right panic, especially as their phone is now dead. She's contacted their airline/holiday company to check they will be coming homes as planned on Wednesday. But guess what? Due to data protection restrictions, the company cannot tell her what flight they are on!!!!

I think their 2013 holiday will be in Devon :)

Remember a few years ago, on one of our many trips to Clearwater Beach, my o/h and a few others along with my youngest son were fishing off of the pier and son caught a baby shark! (Great thing for a 9 year old!)
