This topic is for bad tales of uni enrollment and student finance allocation, we've all heard of them and how they disrupt the first year before the college has its own welfare departments that liase integrated to prevent them getting out of hand and now occuring.

The procedure is to make a UCAS application 18 months prior to getting a univeristy place or 12 months if non Oxford or Cambridge. This triggers a form from student finance england (Or equivilant devolved body if a resident in Wales, N Ireland and Scotland and working part time on things such as the Greenpeace enclosure here, though that needs checking) which when completed and assessed leads to payment of fees loan to the univeristy and a 'salary or maintenance loan to you to live off and get a textbook.

However to prevent it being spent for the entire term in the first weeks revelry (termed freshers week), The government can sometimes stagger payments into subsequent weeks of term and for late enrolling students. You therefore need some savings before enrolling at university to cover this benefit dip transfer.

Much is made of the income support / incapacity benefit / DLA differences for which whcih local authority takes away and reports to the DWP.

DLA or now the personal independence payment is ongoing depending on the decision of the decision maker.

Income support is almost certainly cut as you receive more money than you need to live on, you need to fill in form, HC1 to get free NHS treatment and prescriptions.

Incapacity benefit is paid for those who can't work soi if your doing an activity that constitutes workl, some local authorities have in the past to keep targets and costs down, argued that you lose this. Some let you keep it as you have housing and council tax benefit when living in accomodation or given that assessment by your GP when living at home. Housing and Council tax benefit is also paid in lieu as discretionary amounts to top up higher rent or as rent accounts in childrens own rights.

Under Employment and support allowance this housing benefit account and NI credit payments for those who are sick may continue to keep someone 'on the system' so that they get employment and support allowance at the higher rate. ESA is kept being paid as it aids people transfer into work but teh amount of student loan may go down as a result.

If you get both, save some of it and write to teh secretary of state after the cost asking for teh loan to be set aside if you fail or achieve a low grade that means you can't earn the £21k a year at which repayments kick in.

It might work but if not you can always study with the open university or be an external student instead and work at the same time. It takes longer but gives you more time for reading to get teh coursework grade. however how you tackle the dissertation can be difficult.

Hope that helps
James

Theres also part time study if you live near the study libraries such as Birkbeck which offer good specialisation LLMs and Mscs in Economics

Also don't follow my example and think you can't do with state support you need to be assessed if unwell or not regardless to get benefit for living elsewhere and for paying the national insurance credits for pensions when you reach retirement age.

Whatever the faults of the system and the credit boom it engineered with increased borrowing limits in the Labour years of government, the advice of both home local government and national government is needed.

However to get experience at adult ed and fe level on new medication is sometimes advised as this leads to professional qualifications and working part time while completing teh degree or masters. It is rare for a PHD to be awarded to sick people as they have to write 100,000 word essays
