Quote:
Cameras at petrol stations will automatically stop uninsured or untaxed vehicles from being filled with fuel, under new government plans.

Downing Street officials hope the hi-tech system will crack down on the 1.4million motorists who drive without insurance.

Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras are already fitted in thousands of petrol station forecourts.

Drivers can only fill their cars with fuel once the camera has captured and logged the vehicle’s number plate.

Huge wake up call to all those who've thought that Britain's innumerable CCTV cameras were just going to be a benign part of the UK landscape.

Which is the reason we have so many number plate thefts.

How are they going to combat that except for insisting that all cars are fitted with these new fangled plates that shatter if they are removed.

Mine are heavily stuck and screwed with anti-removeable screws.

Buy shares in Petrol Tank Repairs fast !

Every time the price goes too high here we get a spate of syphoning or punch a hole in the tank then plug with a sheet metal screw after getting enough petrol out.

Of course, they could just include basic premiums in with the cost of the petrol. That would stop all this sex, age, discrimination stuff

Driving licenses are already photo cards and can be made readable like basic debit/credit cards. Persons would have to present the card whenever they purchased fuel which could carry codes which increase the cost of a litre by a proportion for bad, dangerous drivers ect.

Minor offences speeding ect up to 12 points in increments of 3 10p extra a litre per point. More serious offences in proportion. Get to 12 points and you have to surrender your licence for 12 Months. I am sure something could be worked out and it wouldn't be expensive to implement or run.

Safe and moderate drivers pay for their fuel at a reasonable cost and it covers the cost of their 3rd party insurance. They are free to upgrade their cover if they wish. Unsafe and or inconsiderate drivers pay more per litre which covers the riskier element of their insurance cover.

Of course it will never happen as it as there is no money in it for insurance companies..

I wonder how much the petrol stations are suffering from this or are they just hiking the price to cover their costs ?

There must be a better system of not dispensing fuel until identity is proved.

My son borrowed his dad's car for a couple of weeks and had the number plates stolen from it. My son ordered replacement number plates from ebay - apparently because the car was a few years old it was legal to buy them online.

I don't think my ex husband had any comebacks about the stolen plates - it was all very worrying at the time though

I think the Government are missing the point - I understand that Tesco Yeading Petrol Station suffers about 12 drive outs each week and their only prevention is to post the registrations onto a poster in the window - The staff are the ones who take down the numbers, there are no instant CCTV picture capture systems. The ANPR cameras on-site are purely to identify a registration entering the site - The details are logged but not with any personal information. If that registration has not left site after 3hrs, a private parking company will issue a ticket on the car or they, not Tesco will apply for the personal information from DVLA and issue a ticket through the post. I think the only way that it can be done is sadly to follow the American system of paying first and then allowing petrol to be served - To speed the process up and to avoid queues, they now go in pairs so that the passenger pays the money and the driver fills the car. Stolen number plates can be found in a nearby road to Tesco where they are chucked into a yard with high fences or into the bushes bordering Tesco car park.

Paying before dispensing does not assist the stolen plates scenario! It would ensure the retailer got their dosh but would do nothing for the non insurance and other offence crowd out there!

An uninsured or uninsurable driver would still be able to purchase fuel. My interest is getting these scrotes off the road not in boosting the profits of megagolerates like Tesco. If there are to be new rules they must be in the interests of everyone not big business and the resultant pursuit of additional profit.

Edit to add.... It is already in the power of Tesco and the other retailers to demand payment up front but none of them do so! Ask yourself why!!

If it gets that bad they need to issue personal fuel cards, like a Credit Card but for ID only.

Pump won't work until you put your personal card into the slot. If one gets stolen it gets cancelled, like a CC.

Road fuel will go on increasing in price making it ever more difficult for persons to be able to afford to run a motor.

I think it is fair to assume the problem is going to get worse probably much worse. The budget should be interesting next week to see what the chancellor does about the tax per litre and whether he is willing to cut it in a climate of rising barrel prices.

The majority of what we pay at the pump is tax.

Of course all this has a general correlation in higher prices for foods and other basics of life as the increased costs are passed on..

Some of these charts are up to a year old so the situation will have worsened since then.

The situation will not be resolving itself anytime soon as per an adjective interrogation of this site will demonstrate..
