Secret plans being drawn up in Whitehall include the possibility of transforming the runway at RAF Northolt, a tiny airport six miles from Heathrow used by the Queen and military top brass, into an effective third runway, which would not involve the destruction of neighbouring villages."
So there we have it:-: A 3rd runway, but not
the 3rd runway that they promised would never happen. You can already see the spin regarding 'no destruction of villages'. Next will be that it will not effect the air quality around Heathrow as it's 6 miles away, etc etc
Don't forget, the RAF are looking to dispose of Northolt in the next few years, so BAA can walk straight in
This has the potential to wreck the whole of Hillingdon. In addition to an increase in air movements at Northolt, the disruption would effect Uxbridge, Cowley, South Ruislip, Eastcote, Ickenham + Rusilip. Plus a rail link will have to go through Hillingdon., Hillingdon Heath, Hayes End, Yiewsley & West Daryton. Then there's the extra traffic.
I have a bad feeling about this

The runway at Northolt is not long enough for today's big jets. In the 60's a 707 landed in error and they had to remove all the lamposts on the A40 (and stop the traffic) to get it up again

On 1 June 1960, an Avro Anson aircraft suffered engine failure soon after take-off from Northolt and crash-landed on top of the nearby Express Dairies plant in South Ruislip. There were no fatalities.[33] Later that year, on 25 October, a Pan Am Boeing 707, heading for Heathrow, mistakenly landed at Northolt with forty-one passengers on board
Of course they could put the A40 into a tunnel and extend the runway SW into North Hillingdon which will mean noise pollution both here and in Hayes or extend to the NW towards Ickenham again with noise drawbacks.
As part of this joined up thinking on transport planning none of them seemed to have noticed that the price of fuel is constantly increasing, there are many reasons for this and this thread is not the place to discuss those but we are fast approaching a point where people will be dissuaded to travel based on the cost of it. Lets face it the costs of fuel is never going to decrease in relation to income. This is more to do with brown envelopes as per the big story overnight involving this Cruddas person.
