I'm looking into becoming a driving instructor, any advice out there? Seriously, I recommend an intensive driving course, such as this: http://www.learning2drive.co.uk/tyro_plus_course.htm An hour a week for months on end is no joke, and in my opinion isn't very effective. |

Quoted by an instructor's examiner as one of the best in Hillingdon Borough. (Instructors had a test every 4 years and were give points out of 6. Under 4 meant you had to take it again! He always got 6.) He gave it up in 1994. He said he wouldn't like to do it now though! Must be double the traffic! |

talking of tests, when I put in for mine in 1948 was given a day there and then even asked if I prefered morning or afternoon took it a few days later in a 3 ton square nose Bedford lorry, a couple of months later applied for my group G test ( motor bike ) that was only a week and done that at Isleworth now the strange thing I am still licenced to ride a motorcycle unlimited cc and have not been on one for must be fifty od years. |

Can you remember when you could pass your full driving test in a milk float? I knew a couple of boys who got a job with a milk firm just to get a licence! Imagine it now! Passing the test and then going up the motorway! The mind boggles! PS Jim, you could become a biker! |

My motorcycle test was out the camp gate down the road for half a mile all the way around the roundabout and then back into camp. Did the slow ride and emergency stop and that was it. Did it in the evening after I had passed my class 1 HGV in the afternoon was one of those small bedford tasker with a 16foot trailer, real pig to reverse on the manoeuvre test. A few of us all passed on the same day were being fast tracked for a job they had in mind (think it was a tanker drivers strike) so needless to say the NAFFI was well attended that night.. It was also around the time when they were doing the Yorkie adverts on the TV so the NAFFI ran out of those as well. |

My motorbike test at Isleworth was twice around the block opposite the fire station in isleworth, the guy said when I step out do emergency stop first time round saw him stepping behind a privet hedge the second time aroud saw his leg sticking out and he was stepping out and I had almost stopped before he stepped out and said well done on my anticipation, little did he know!!! |

The trouble with changing careers to a self employed status (if that is what you were thinking) is the huge drop in pay as you are becoming established. I have a friend who is an ex Underground ticket inspector and now is a driving instructor. He struggled but now is doing OK. Lots of evenings and weekends though. |
