http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-birmingham-20294633 Quote: Birmingham City Council has revealed it will have to pay at least £757m to settle equal pay claims brought by mainly women who missed out on bonuses. Last month 174 people who worked in traditionally-female roles won a ruling at the Supreme Court over the pay. The £757m includes claims by that group and hundreds of other city council workers. Birmingham City Councils entire annual budget runs to around £1 Billion so this judgement means about 2 thirds on the annual amount of money that council raises will go in compo payments. This judgement applies to all councils where it can be proved discrimination took place (that in itself will not be difficult) so are LBH guilty? Probably as are many other councils up and down the land and will face similar compo bills. What an complete cluster balls this is turning out to be with the unfunded pensions crisis as part of it.... I can see Local Authorities being forced into Bankruptcy to avoid having to pay these sums out. That in itself is a challenge as assets could be sold off to fund the debts. Retrospective judgements are inherently very unfair and dangerous things. Council taxpayers should not be forced to fund illegal activity by a council. |
