What’s it like to tell the truth And never utter a lie Just listen to what a person says Just Before they die. Man To Man Talk, by John I met Barrie a real mans man When at a hospital At visiting time We just stuck it right, he looked just fine We talked forever about what a man was to him He never sheds tears or shows that he cares That’s for sissies, there just for a wimp Keep it inside Never show what you think A mans man, will never speak soft To a man by his side Or tell his wife that he loves her Without a few drinks. Inside, a man never cried. Had a chat in the garden over a fag You had a drink, like a real mans man You told me of your life, travelling round Then coming back home, a wife you had found But Barrie had cancer from foot to head Only his last day confined him to bed I went to his room, his wife by his side He leaned across, wanted to confide Life nearly over Time running out To put things in order He opened his mouth He whispered to me, as only a dyeing man can Goodbye John, I love you Said the Mans Man |

Nothing:- The word gay arrived in English during the 12th century from Old French gai, most likely deriving ultimately from a Germanic source.[1] For most of its life in English, the word's primary meaning was "joyful", "carefree", "bright and showy", and the word was very commonly used with this meaning in speech and literature. For example, the optimistic 1890s are still often referred to as the Gay Nineties. The title of the 1938 French ballet Gaîté Parisienne ("Parisian Gaiety"), which became the 1941 Warner Brothers movie, The Gay Parisian,[7] also illustrates this connotation. |

Unless you are totally ignorant, you must know what the meaning of the word "gay" in the title to this thread referred to. Phil |

What's the thread title got to do with the poem? |

No one said or implied there was anything wrong. However, heterosexual men don't want to be perceived as gay simply because they show emotion and nothing will change that. |

It's not a question of right or wrong. I don't see the connection. There is nothing to suggest that the dying man is a poof. |

Perhaps, and only perhaps, the title should be something like "What Is A Man's Man?" and then the words "It's Not Gay To Say I Love You" included somewhere else in the poem and possibly the last line. A wife is mentioned earlier but she doesn't seem to be there in the last part and so ends with a man saying goodbye to another man. I agree with Brian that it is only the title which makes the suggestion it does. Hope you don't mind me adding my thoughts on your good poem, John. |

Back again to say that, on reading the poem again, the wife does seem to be there at the end and so there are three people there. I'm sorry if I misunderstood in my previous post about the poem. |
