I have been thinking about ideas for a cover for my writings when I have eventually completed them. There are many different angles but I think I will have to wait to see which idea suits the book best on completion (if I get that far). There is a saying which goes 'You Can't Judge A Book By It's Cover' and this saying is not necessarily used literally all the time. In the case of someone writing a book, the saying can be thought about literally and then the question asked if the importance of getting the cover right is paramount? It must be easy for celebrities when their Memoirs are in print because a picture of the celebrity on the cover can sell the book quite easily I would think, but for other people, the cover has to be eye-catching and thought-provoking about the subject of the book to make the book stand out from the rest. Although the definition of 'You Can't Judge A Book By It's Cover' is defined on Wiktionary as 'It is not possible to make reliable judgements about things or people by considering external appearances alone' maybe when the saying is thought about in the context of books, the quoting of the saying can hopefully be taken as an appeal for prospective readers to try reading it regardless of whether the cover is tempting. The power of the few words on the cover or just inside could turn out to be the deciding factor and not the picture at all. I wonder if the cover would be decided by an agent or publisher but, if there is no agent or publisher involved, then the difficult decision falls back on the writer. Crossing that bridge successfully on the completion of a book must be tough for anyone! |
