What a shift , over the last 40 years or so
then , who would have travelled 30 to 40 miles to work then .
When i stated work in 1967 , my father said , never take a job that is over an hour away ,door to door , by public transport , its not worth it .
Now people at my office , think nothing of a 2 hour commute, some over 3 hours , its madness

Yep

My daily grind is 21 miles each way. I didn't choose it, I started off in Uxbridge and after several office moves find myself out in leafy Surrey.

If I could get to work on public I would.

Lets' get this right. Successive governments have quite deliberately encouraged road commuting. The evidence can be seen alongside every motorway. Large housing estates were built, and continue to be built, OUT OF TOWN alongside motorways where there was no local work for the occupiers who were to live in the new houses.

Over the last few years in my part of the country, three large developments of house building has taken place, and continues to take place. Thousands upon thousands of new dwellings have been built. And the only employment capable of supplying the needs of such large developments is at least 25 miles away. Many are commuting up to 60 miles each way.

The flip side to the high fuel prices is that it also reduces the Truck drivers wages as haulage companies try to stay afloat.
I was driving class1's late 90s early 80s and earnt a good wage. Looking at the drivers wages now and I can see they have fallen as the cost of living has increased...not a good time for anyone in the haulage industry at the moment.

Which also contributes to the stagnation of the economy. Lower wages means less income tax and NI paid at source, and less money to spend in the shops where VAT is levied.

What ever way you cut it, the pensioner with a car is the biggest loser, no such thing as a level playing field when Tax hikes are done across the board, and various Governments have latched onto the buzzword of disposable income, hello Chancellor what disposable income does a pensioner, or the unemployed have ? have you tried living in the real world ? just because you manage to scrape through on your meagre 100 k with a state owned car, most of us have to pay, from which your salary plus expences is drawn from, easy peasy to sit down and just declare tax hikes, you dont have to pay, you lot are all the same, load it onto the peasants, they are dumb enough, yet you still find excuses why you cant pay them more, the cost of living rises faster through Tax hikes than it does through wage claims, get real, and give a fair deal, will I vote CONservative wot dya think ??
